Shoptimist: May 2013

Hello everyone! Holy crap. I suck at updating this thing. I didn't realize that it's been a whole week and a day since I lasted updated and that was an Insta-Fashion post. Ugh. I apologize! Work has been crazy and I can't seem to find the time to snap pictures for the day. Anywho. It is the last day of May 2013! Argh. Where has time gone?? As we say goodbye to one month and hello to another, I obviously had to scramble together another Shoptimist post! While I gathered all my things and placed them neatly in the photos, I definitely realized how much 'stuff' I've accumulated over the course of a month. These are all beauty related products, sadly. So please, sit back and enjoy!

Products mentioned:

Lush Dream Cream
Maybelline New York Fit Me Concealer
L'Oreal Ever Pure Sulfate-Free Shampoo for Dyed Hair
Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Spray
John Frieda Sheer Blonde Shampoo
Boots Extracts Mango Sugar Scrub
Lush Rub Rub Rub
Milani Baked Blush
Gold Jewelry
Sinful Colors Professional
Revlon Lip Butter (063) Wild Watermelon
Masque Bar by Look Beauty (Blemish mud mask)
Ukulele

So, I finally crumbled. I spent a long time debating whether or not I should invest in Lush products. I've heard numerous vloggers, bloggers, friends and acquaintances rave about this shit. I always wanted to find out what all the hype was about but the one thing that was holding me back was definitely the prices. Lush offers creams, shampoos, conditioners, make up, face masks, even hair dye! All in which are 'fresh handmade cosmetics'. I thought about it long and hard and finally said 'fuck it'. Me and Rachel ventured out to the nearest Lush and went ape shit. We stepped in and were immediately greeted by the employees. All of them were so helpful, nice and willing to show us how each product worked. Now, this was my second time actually walking into a Lush store. The first time was in England, where I had no idea what was going on. I mistook all their bath bombs as cheese and the entire idea of skin care products confused me. So, Rachel and I listened attentively during the demo. We walked up and down the entire store, spending our sweet time examining every product. I decided on the 'Dream Cream' and 'Rub Rub Rub'. So I've been using the 'Dream Cream' ever since I bought it, which was about 2 weeks ago and this stuff is AMAZING. It absorbs into my skin nicely and I love the way it feels afterwards. I put this on my legs and on my arms and my skin has never felt as soft as it does now. I highly recommend this for anyone and everyone! I'm not a super huge fan of the smell. To me, it smells like oatmeal, to Rachel it smells like gin. At first I hated the smell but now I don't mind it. It is all natural and one of the ingredients IS oats, but nonetheless, I still love it!
So, last month I gave my review on the Revlon Photo Ready concealer. As the weeks went by, I realized how much I didn't like it. It didn't do a good job of concealing my blemishes at all. It would kind of just glide over them and I couldn't really tell the difference. So I went out to the drugstore and raided the make up section. I wanted a concealer that would conceal a lot more than just redness. I've been hearing a lot of good things about the Maybelline foundations and concealer so I got Maybelline's Fit Me concealer in 'Light'. At first I didn't know how to feel about it because unlike the Revlon Photo Ready concealer, it was a lot thicker and it wasn't in stick form, rather, it came with a lip gloss applicator looking thing (I don't know the technical term but you get the point). I came to the conclusion that I really love this concealer. It does what it's supposed to do...CONCEAL! It took away a lot of redness and blemishes, but it didn't make my face cake-y. After blending it with a concealer brush, my face looked flawless. So I highly recommend this to anyone that's looking for a cheaper concealer and one that's good at hiding pesky blemishes.
When I heard that L'Oreal was making a sulfate-free collection, I HAD to jump on that bandwagon. It's not just for regular hair, they have them for curly hair and dyed hair. So I went out to the nearest Target and they were stocked! I spent a very long time trying to decide which one I should use. They also have three scents for each collection. I have to say that the scent is my least favorite thing about this product. It smells like cleaning chemicals. I tried to pick the less harsh smelling one but all of them have this powerful oder. The shampoo itself is like any other shampoo I've used. It's very average to me, but I like the fact that it has zero sulfates in it. I feel like my hair gets a little bit moisturized when using this product. My hair doesn't feel completely like hay after using this stuff. Would I buy it again? Probably not.
I strongly believe in heat sprays. I'm willing to give any of them a try because I'm so paranoid of my curling iron burning my hair off. One of my favorite vloggers at the moment raved about this product so I had to give it a try. I've tried the L'oreal heat protectant spray, which I absolutely adore, but I wanted to try something new. This product doesn't have a harsh smell to it which is nice. It smells very fresh, like when you first come out of the shower. The spray bottle itself is very convenient. It sprays a nice, even spray and it's easy to operate. The product itself is really smoothing. After letting it dry completely, I feel like my hair is nourished and a bit softer. I recommend this to anyone that finds themselves adding any sort of heat to their hair. This spray protects up to 450 degrees which is crazy!
So I redyed my hair about a week ago. I noticed my ends were getting super dull and faded and my hair was growing out which meant my ombre was shrinking. I bleached it twice in one day (bad, I know). After bleaching it, I wanted my hair to be a shade blonde-r but my ends were completely fried. So after about two days of contemplating whether I should dye my hair again, I read up on this John Frieda blonde shampoo. It's supposed to make your hair gradually 'blonde-r'. I don't know if I believe that, but like a chump I tried it anyway. It's a pleasant smelling shampoo that I only apply to my ends. In the shower, the tips of my hair does seem to get lighter. I don't know if it's my hopeful attitude that this stuff is actually working or if it's actually doing anything to my hair but I would like to believe that I didn't just waste 7 dollars. I leave it on for about 5 minutes because I really want my hair to absorb as much of the product as possible. Overall, I don't really notice THAT much of a change in hair color. It's not going to be dramatic, rather, gradual. I'm going to continue using this product and hopefully something happens!
The next product, I bought on a whim. A complete whim. I was in Target and looking at all of their body scrubs and body care products when I noticed this baby. I am a mango fanatic! I love anything mango scented and mango flavored. So when I opened this, I was immediately hit with a strong mango scent. I seriously wanted to eat this stuff. I was so excited about trying out this new product and I've never used a sugar scrub before so I didn't really know how my skin would take it. After the first shower, I was in utter disappointment. I seriously just wasted 10 bucks...all because it smelled like a mango tree. I was douped. This product actually feels nice when applying it in the shower. I like the feeling of scrubs on my body but when I tried to wash it off, it was gross. I felt like I still had the stuff on me, so I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed. I felt like there was this hard wax cover over my body. It was sticky and hard and I didn't like it one bit. It was such a disappointment. Now, of course I'm going to use this product till the very end but overall, I would give this product two thumbs down.
Another Lush product! Rub Rub Rub is a salt scrub for the body. I freaken LOVE this stuff! It smells like the ocean and it feels amazing on my skin. At first, I was super hesitant about it because of the color but after lathering it on your skin, the product actually leaves a sud-y feel. It's gets rid of the dead skin that you may carry. I use this product twice a week and I put on the 'Dream Cream' right after and my skin is amazingly soft. I love this stuff and I highly recommend this to anyone who likes salt scrubs. It's around 26 bucks but this stuff will last! You won't use it as often as you think and you don't need that much to begin with. LOVE.
So I was in search of a really nice blush. I've never really used blush because I didn't really think I needed it and I stuck with bronzer if I felt like my skin needed some warmth. So I went to Target and noticed this Milani blush. It was so beautiful. I don't know anything about shades or what's right for what skin tone but I knew that I wanted to try this. It is the perfect shade of rosey pink but still has really nice gold undertones to it. So I bought it and let me say, I'm extremely pleased with it. I don't feel like it's overpowering or too much. I think it's the subtle pop of color that my face so desperately needed. So I highly recommend this for anyone who wants a subtle blush, nothing crazy. The trick with blush is to BLEND.
GOLD JEWELRY! My new fashion obsession at the moment is gold jewelry. I cannot get enough. I never really dug gold in general but I've been in love with pairing gold with a lot of my red or black clothes. I feel like it's nice and it's a really nice, classy touch to my outfits. I bought these bangles at Forever 21.
I'm a sucker for nail polish. I have a ridiculous collection that is growing in my closest. I've got all the colors of the rainbow. I seriously need help. When I went to Target recently, I looked at all of their polishes. They had really nice Essie colors to really solid China Glaze. I came to realize that all of these companies are so expensive. Essie is 8 bucks a bottle which is a bit ridiculous if you ask me. Then I noticed at the very bottom of the shelves these beauties. Sinful Colors Professional. I also noticed they were 2 bucks!!! I was so on board. I have to say, these polishes are just as good as the higher end brands. There are an assortment of colors to choose from, the actual polish is super nice and lasts and did I mention they are two freaken bucks?
So, I've kind of become obsessed with lip products these past few months. I've accumulated so many different shades of reds, pinks and corals. It's ridiculous. I heard about Revlon lip butters for a while now and they were getting a lot of rave so I had to try it! I was trying to look for a reddish color but this was the closest I could find. At first, I hated this product but I find that over the course of a month, I've learned to really love this product. When I first tried it, I hated that it wasn't super pigmented. I also hated that it wasn't the red I thought I was buying. After reusing it, I realized that I was definitely spoiled whilst using the Kate Moss lipsticks because the difference between this product and that is night and day. This product completely moisturizes your lips without being really sticky. I've grown to love this color because after a while of wearing it, the color fades but not in a bad way, I'm left with an almost rosey pink lip color which I kind of adore. It's amazing. I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a lip product with very subtle color and moisture.
Another product I wanted to give a go was face masks. I've been using the same ol' face mask for a while now and I wanted to give something else a try. While I was at Target, I found this beauty. They had three different types of face masks but I needed one that could heal blemishes. I went home that night and gave it a try. This clay mask was definitely interesting. I don't regularly use clay masks so I was surprised at how thick and hard it was. I put it all over my face and waited 20 minutes for it to harden. After washing it off completely, I felt like my skin was refreshed. It felt so clean and soft and a lot of the redness of my blemishes went down. It didn't take away my blemishes completely but it definitely tamed them and reduced redness. I recommend this for anyone who is looking for a mask that helps reduce the appearances of blemishes or redness.
Lastly, something non-make up/beauty related. This is Sean's ukulele that he let me borrow. I got it last week and I'm OBSESSED with it! I've been watching youtube videos on tutorials and looking up chords and trying to learn this all on my own. I used to play guitar and I even took a guitar class in high school (hi Roberto) so I'm trying to transition into ukulele playing. It's a fairly easy instrument so the chords aren't that hard to play but it's so hard tuning this dang thing because the strings are so sensitive. Maybe one day you guys can hear me play but for now, I need to practice!

Inspiration: Life

Hello everyone! This past weekend was a bit of craziness for me and it was hard for me to update the blog, but no worries, I am back! It's not a fashion post nor a insta-fashion post but a Inspiration post. This might be my favorite Inspiration post I'll do in a while. The last one was a great learning experience for me but this one is close to my heart. I got the chance to interview a very important human being in my life, my grandmother. I spent most of my childhood at her house, playing, eating, laughing, and making memories as cheesy as that sounds. I've learned so much from my grandmother, I cherish her and love her with all my heart. My fondest memories from my childhood is playing in her garden with my brother. I remember slipping on my rain boots during rainy days and plunging into gigantic puddles. On summer days, I remember playing with bugs and eating dirt with my brother and laughing. My fondest memories of my grandmother's garden was always shared with laughter. I loved that garden so much but I know my grandma has a strong bond with it. It's a part of her. She cares for it everyday. It's what brings joy to her life and smiles on her face. I love hearing her talk about it. My grandmother believed in going 'green' before it was even called 'going green'. She learned to DIY before my mom could walk. She lives and breathes a healthy lifestyle but doesn't make it a statement in her life, instead, it's a lifestyle. She's the one who taught me about biodegradable food, recycling, gardening and living a fresher and healthier life. This interview was a bit hilarious, to say the least. The language barrier was the hardest part. I'm not fluent in Japanese at all. AT ALL. I understand broken Japanese pretty well but nowhere near fluent, so I had my mother there to help me translate for her. We spent close to an hour trying to explain what 'inspiration' meant. We tried our best to give the best interview.

A lot of the questions in this interview dealt with her way of life regarding gardening and her journey to America. She also told me about my grandfather, whom I've never met. So please, sit back and enjoy.

First things first, I wanted to know when she started growing and planting her own garden. She told me she started when she first got to America in the 1960's. She moved in the house with my mom and my grandfather in 1964. She said the house was so barren and empty. As a stay at home mom, she had the time to make this barren backyard into a plentiful garden.
She inspires me in my every day life, I wanted to know what inspired her. She simply said her family. She says that family is very important to her, she leans on my mom and all of us for everything. She wouldn't know where she would be without her family.
She expressed me to how important it was to her that she grew her own veggies and did a lot of her own gardening, but I wanted to know what she got out of it all. Why was it important? Was it an easier way of life? She expressed to me the effects of WWII and rationing of food had a big influence on her lifestyle. She says it's just who she is. She was never a wasteful person and she never liked to throw anything away because she finds a purpose for everything. At times, she finds herself wondering if she could trust what they sell at markets, with her veggies and plants she knows they are all natural.
My entire family knows that she has this obsession with frogs. Animated frogs, real frogs, frog prints, frogs. Her bathroom is covered with frog printed everything. I asked why. She laughed out loud and said because they're so cute!
My grandma and mom came over to America from Japan in the 1960's. They adapted to the 'American' lifestyle pretty quickly with the help of my grandpa. He was fluent in both Japanese and English so my grandma never had to stress about the language barrier.
Here's where the interview got a little emotional for me. I've heard my mom talk about my grandpa countless times, I grew up with my mom's stories but I've never heard my grandma's. I wanted to know who my grandpa was in her eyes because for so long, I knew who he was in my mom's eyes. She started by saying that they were married for 40 years. In those 40 years, there were no arguments or fights. They looked after one another. If there were things my grandpa couldn't do, my grandma would help and vice versa. He was a very hard worker. He worked all day and would go home to my grandma and relax in his rocking chair (which she still has) while my grandma would make dinner and take care of him. She did admit that she regrets never learning how to drive. She attempted it once and almost crashed the car. She remembers my grandpa being more concerned about the car getting damaged than her.
I asked her what he would've thought of me now. She let out a 'kawaiiiiiiii', which means cute in Japanese. I was born on September 15, 1990. My grandpa was put in the hospital on August 31st, 1990. He died on October 10th, 1990. He only knew me through a baby picture my mom gave him in the hospital. My grandma would take the bus everyday, to visit my grandpa and he would ask about me everyday. My mom tells me that my picture was the last thing he was about to process before he became incoherent. My grandma said he would've spoiled me rotten and I would've been his pride and joy.

This was an amazing experience overall. I hope you guys learned something new about me and my family.

Hope you enjoyed!

Insta-Disneyland...?

Hello everyone! I hope you guys are enjoying the weekend so far! It is an absolutely beautiful day in California! Birds are chirping, the sun is shinning which means it's the perfect time for an insta-fashion post, Disneyland edition! Woop. Sean and I ventured out to Anaheim, California for his 22nd b-day yesterday! We got so lucky with the weather! It wasn't super hot, nor super cold, but just right. The pants are seriously one of my favorite articles of clothing that I own at the moment. They're super comfy and skin tight and an awesome shade of brown! So here it is! Check it out!

Inspiration: Fashion

Hello everyone! I hope you guys are off to a wonderful start on this manic Monday. Southern California is experiencing somewhat of a major heatwave over here, so we're trying to stay as cool as possible. I apologize for the brief absence, my computer charger decided to poop out on me and I was running on 2% battery life so I had to go out and buy a new one...I'm just hoping this heat wave won't melt my new charger. So beginning today, I'm starting a new post called...'Inspiration'. I know, it's not original whatsoever but I'm still working on it! These posts are posts about people that truly inspire me everyday. It could be people that I look up to for fashion, music, art or life in general. I'll interview these particular people to get a more in depth look into what makes them so inspiring and interesting to me. These people are friends, family, peers or maybe even people I just met. I want whoever is reading this blog to see the inspiration behind my outfits, my posts and my life.
My first 'inspiration' post is someone I've been looking up to for a while now. I can't remember when my interest in fashion started but I do remember who and what inspired me to get into fashion. Tracey is more than fashionable in my eyes, she has a warm heart and such an interesting outlook on the way fashion is presented. She takes a particular look and makes it all her own. She has this amazing way to make her outfits fit with class and beauty that is unexplainable to me. I've been looking up to her for a while now. As a 11 year old tomboy, I remember going to my mom's work and meeting Tracey for the first time and just being amazed at her style. The more I went to the office, the more I tried seeing what Tracey was wearing. I always remembered her having this funny and silly outlook on everything and I always remember her making my mom laugh and smile about everything, even still to this day. She's much more than a co-worker to me, she's someone I look up to, not just on a professional level but fashion as well.
She was very forgiving on this interview, being as it was my first. I wanted to ask the questions that always boggled my mind in regards to her fashion. I wish we had a longer period of time to talk about other things but we worked with what we got.

The first thing I wanted to know was if she was always interested in fashion and if it had started at a young age. She told me that her mother was an amazing seamstress and it was her mother who taught her how to sew. Tracey was always interested in fashion and it never started at a particular age. Something that I thought was interesting about her answer was that she said her mother let her wear whatever she wanted regardless of how ridiculous it was.
Since Tracey is the one who inspires me, I wanted to know what or who inspired her fashion sense. She told me she got inspiration from the simplest of window set ups. She could be walking down the street and see a nice window set up and she would feel inspired to put together an outfit resembling it. As far as people, I fell in love with her answer. She said Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O and her own mother. I couldn't agree with her more. Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O are two of the most powerful icons from the 60's. Their style is seen by women as inspirational, simple, classy and chic. They don't overpower fashion, instead they believe less is more in terms of accessories, make up and clothes. Tracey said that she has three framed pictures in her bathroom, a picture of Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O and her mother. She also finds Sarah Jessica Parker to be another fashion inspiration. She says that Sarah Jessica Parker doesn't let the clothes wear her, but instead she owns every look she wears.
I wanted to know if she found herself to be caught up in recent fashion trends and she simply shook her head. She admitted to being more into fashion trends earlier on, reading fashion mag after fashion mag but lately she could care less. She says she has found her 'standard style' and is content with it. Although she does admit to never doing 'comfort over style'. She refuses.
One thing that I find interesting is the whole 'name brand v. non-name brand' argument. I wanted to get her view and input on it. She told me "If I like something, I get it. I don't care what name it has on it, I'll get it." She likes anything from the top name brands to random findings at Ross. She told me when she goes out to the department stores to shop for shoes, she doesn't look at any of the brand names or companies, she picks out the one she finds most appealing and sometimes, it happens to be the higher end brand name. She says that the higher end brand always carry that little detail that makes it extra special to her.
Another question I had to ask was what she thought was going to be the hottest trends in Summer 2013. She told me that long maxi dresses never go out of style. She believes that the summer is going to call for more of a laid back style for girls, mostly soft baggy shirts and simple dresses. I couldn't agree with this more.
And of course I needed to know what she was wearing so I could report to you guys. I wanted the details of her make up, clothes and hair! First things first, the fashion. She was wearing nude colored pointed heels by Ellen Tracy, which were super simple and the heel was very low. She also had on a black pencil skirt by BCBG and a black shirt by Zadig & Voltaire. She completed the look with a gold ring and a leopard print belt by J Crew. Her bag was Louis Vuitton and she paired it with Chanel sunglasses. I really wanted to know what make up she used because her look is always flawless. She admitted that make up was not her forte, which shocked me but made me feel at ease because I thought I was the only make up knowledge deprived. We totally connected on that level. She uses a lot of neutral eye colors and simple powders to brighten her face. She admits to using the same products over and over and over again because she's so used to how those products are and how they look on her skin. She uses a lot of Senna products, Lancome and Armani blushes, and a MAC eyeliner. She also shared with me that she is getting into Moroccan Oils which is super awesome because I was thinking of giving that a try. She recommends it because it leaves your hair feeling super silky and soft and non-frizzy.
Lastly, I wanted to know what fashion quote she lives by and to no surprise she quoted Coco Chanel. It's also one of my favorite Coco Chanel quotes. "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory." This quote goes with the "less is always more" theme.

Overall, this was an amazing experience that I'll never forget. I'm so excited for the rest of whats to come on this blog and so much more. I hope you guys have enjoyed this new section!

Sk8 or Die

Hello everyone! Happy hump day! Today was a magical day because I had the day off. The weather was perfect, sunny and beautiful. It was the perfect weather for some good ol' fashion skateboarding! Let me just start off by saying, I am not a professional nor am I the most coordinated human being out there but I love attempting to skate. There was a period of time where I tried to practice in my driveway everyday...but that soon fizzled away. So now I try and skate whenever it's beautiful or whenever I'm not feeling lazy and today was the day! Me and Sean skated and took pictures around my neighborhood which was super fun! The wind blew my hair in a magical way, and Sean captured it awesomely! I love it. So here is the result of our mini adventure!

Put an End to Cat Calls

Hello everyone! Happy Sunday! So I start full time at work tomorrow for four months, all day and almost everyday! That means more insta-fashion posts/fashion posts. Y'all can take a look at what I wear to work and all that jazz. For this fashion post, I chose to wear one of my favorite crop tops! Two of my favorite things, kitties and Summer Vacation! So cute! When I first saw this shirt, I fell in love. It has a picture of a cat, talking on a giant red phone...what is there not to love? I've been so obsessed with putting my hair up in a ponytail or bun and just letting it be...I'm not so sure if it's for the look or the convenience (and I kind of like the look of having a blonde bun sitting on top of my head). Today, me and Rachel cut Tawny's hair. This is always so much fun because we all have a blast laughing and talking whilst cutting away Tawny's problems, she feels it's more therapeutic than anything else. As the strands hit the floor, her problems melt away. It's nice to know that a haircut could do that. After, we went shopping together and I bought a few things that I'm pretty stoked on showing you guys, you'll just have to wait and see.

Shoes: Converse
Skirt: Target
Shirt: Sum Vacay (You'll have to see em to get one, silly goose)
Bracelet: Random shop in Japan
Sunglasses: Thrifted

Make up: same ol' routine
Hair: Lazily placed in a bun

Hope you enjoyed, kitty cats!
